More firefighters dispatched to the Asprochori, Oropos fire in East Attica due to smoke

More firefighters were dispatched to the Asprochori region of Oropos, in East Attica, where a low-brush fire led earlier to the evacuation of residents.

According to the Fire Department, the strong winds in the area helped the fire to spread, heading toward the village of Asprochori where residents received a message on the emergency 112 number at 18:25 to head toward the Athens-Lamia National Highway. The fire broke out shortly before 18:00.

Although wind velocity dropped, the smoke has made firefighting difficult. A total of 140 firefighters with 5 rough terrain teams, 39 fire trucks, and many volunteers are fighting the fire. Until sunset, 13 airplanes and 8 helicopters (1 used for coordination) were also at the site. The 'Olympus' mobile operations center is coordinating operations by land. In addition, local government and the army have provided earthworks machinery and water trucks, while the Fire Department chief has dispatched an arson investigation team to the site.

The fire also led to traffic rerouting in the area. Specifically, traffic on the auxiliary road of the Athens-Lamia National Highway, at the point near the juncture for Malakassa and in the direction heading to Lamia, has been redirected for reasons of security and to facilitate fire truck passage.
