Fire at Asprochori, Oropos has two fronts, mayor says; overnight battle

Firefighters will have to work through the night to put out the brush fire that broke out near Asprochori in Oropos, East Attica, Oropos Mayor Giorgos Giassimakis told Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) on Wednesday night.
"There are two fronts, and they are moving in a northeasterly direction. Obviously things are tough, but they are somewhat better than the previous picture, when the strong winds fanned the fire," Giassimakis said. "The mobilization was great, but the bad thing is that aerial help stopped, since darkness fell. A lot of work has been carried out up to now, and we will continue to battle" the fire, he added.
Asked about the evacuation and whether residences were in danger, the Oropos mayor said, "Asprochori was evacuated in time. At this point, the front is somewhat away from homes, but everything will depend on the winds, and the winds change directions," he said.
