Aim. Perdikaris: ABNA-SE agencies to sign declaration on fighting fake news

The news agencies of the Balkans and Southeastern Europe (ABNA-SE Europe) will on Monday sign a declaration in which they pledge to combat fake news, the president of the Athens-Macedonian News Agency Aimilios Perdikaris announced in a greeting welcoming participants to the start of the ABNA-SE Conference in Thessaloniki. He said the declaration will be signed after the conclusion of the Conference on "The role of news information in the new Balkan reality", organised by Athens-Macedonian News Agency in the context of its presidency of ABNA-SE Europe).

Perdikaris underlined that plans for the practical and substantial deepening of cooperation between the news agencies are progressing, citing the Balkan newsroom as an example of this collaboration. At the same time, he announced that a presentation will be made at the conference of an initiative of the Greek government, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and media bodies, including the ANA, for a Centre for the education and safety of journalists.

"Our conference will attempt to thoroughly examine geopolitical developments in SE Europe and to highlight the importance of news. We have chosen a theme with many symbolisms, as it links our work, providing news, with the interconnection networks, the bridges of cooperation and development, while at the same time it highlights the goal of the future, which is none other than the incorporation of the Western Balkans into Europe," he pointed out.

Perdikaris also highlighted the fact that the conference and the ABNA-SE General Assembly that will take place on Wednesday are being held in Thessaloniki, a city chosen because of its position, its role and its history in the heart of the Balkans and of SE Europe.

"I feel happy and honoured, and that I have a special duty, that the privilege of chairing this conference belongs to our news agency at an extremely complex time. A period in which the news agencies we are representing are called to meet the huge needs of our times, while also being aware of the crucial geopolitical developments that are taking place in our region.

Perdikaris emphasised the upgrading of ABNA-SE Europe, noting that from today, it will increase its interventions and strive for a different informative role, one which will be substantial, unifying, free of localisms, nationalism and  outdated perceptions with one and only target: the truth, in contrast to fake news and misinformation. In this context, he announced that the Association was ready to accept new candidacies.

Finally, he made a special reference to the train accident in Tempi and to the earthquakes in Southeastern Turkey, noting that both countries are still shocked by the two different incidents that brought the same grief, with the loss of human lives. A minute's silence was observed as the least honour to the memory of the victims, followed by an Anadolu Agency video dedicated to the all those that lost their lives.

The conference can be livestreamed on the website www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dNZ8yTCNDg
