The government on Tuesday welcomed the strategic agreement between the Hellenic Post (ELTA) and Alpha Bank to jointly offer banking services throughout Greece.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and relevant ministers were notified of the completion of the agreement during a meeting of ministers, bankers, and ELTA officials at Maximos Mansion.

The agreement is a recognition and confirmation of changes that have occurred at ELTA in recent years, and contributes to transforming a once deeply problematic business into one that can attract as strategic partner one of Greece's systemic banks which includes among its shareholders Unicredit, one of the largest financial agencies in Europe, Mitsotakis said.

Government sources further added that the specific agreement will contribute greatly to achieving the government's policy of serving more of older citizens, small and medium-sized enterprises of regional Greece and isolated communities.

"Distances are shortened. Every citizen and SME has access to the well-known postal service and to new banking services with ELTA next to him/her, when nearly 1.1 million citizens are now estimated not to have access to a bank branch in a radius of less than 10 kilometers," the sources added.
