Bank of Greece: Loans' interest rates lower in January

The weighted average interest rates on new deposits remained unchanged at 0.45% in January 2025, while the corresponding rate of loans decreased to 5.10%, according to the Bank of Greece (BoG).

The interest rate spread between new deposits and loans fell to 4.65 percentage points, it added.

The weighted average interest rate on outstanding amounts of deposits remained unchanged at 0.49% in January, while the corresponding rate on loans dropped to 5.34% and the interest rate spread between outstanding amounts of deposits and loans dropped to 4.85 percentage points.

In the same period, the weighted average interest rate on new deposits remained unchanged at 0.45% compared with the previous month.

In particular, the average interest rates on overnight deposits placed by households and by non-financial corporations remained stable at 0.03% and 0.16%, respectively.

The average interest rate on deposits from households with an agreed maturity of up to 1 year remained almost unchanged at 1.64%, while the corresponding rate on deposits from non-financial corporations decreased by 24 basis points to 2.32%.

Regarding new loans, the weighted average interest rate on new loans to households and non-financial corporations fell by 10 basis points to 5.10%.

More specifically, the average interest rate on consumer loans without a defined maturity (a category that comprises credit cards, revolving loans and overdrafts) decreased by 16 basis points to 14.88%.

The average interest rate on consumer loans with a defined maturity at a floating rate decreased by 12 basis points to 11.77%, while the average interest rate on housing loans at a floating rate increased by 31 basis points to 3.90%.

On corporate loans without a defined maturity, it was reduced by 43 basis points to 5.45%. The corresponding rate on loans to sole proprietors remained almost stable at 7.20%.
