A public prosecutor on Saturday brought a number of serious charges against 19 suspects arrested in connection with a protection racket, including four police officers, following a police internal affairs investigation and raid.
The case, which involves protection services to brothels and gambling dens, also appears to involve a number of other individuals, with evidence pointing to more than 70 individuals having a minor or major role in the operation of the two gangs, which operated through fake companies. At least one person was being sought for questioning by the authorities.
The charges include running a criminal organisation, forming and joining a criminal gang, fraud against the public sector, bribery, taking bribes, money laundering and illegal weapons possession, among others.
The police officers involved have been additionally charged with violating service confidentiality and breach of duty, as well as offering services contrary to the position and duties of a police employee.
The prosecutor also charged individuals not yet in custody with pimping and organising illegal gambling games.
The case has been referred to an examining magistrate.
