Flames rekindle in Rethymno; fires start in Aspropyrgos, Lakonia

A part of the fire in the Akoumia area in Rethymno, Crete rekindled on Wednesday, with efforts underway to quickly put out the flames, at the same time that a fire started within the Evligia Gorge at Pefkakia.
According to information obtained by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, a 112 warning has been sent to residents of Tria Monastiria to be prepared in case of an evacuation.
Helicopters that joined the fire-fighting effort are assisting efforts to put out the rekindled flames in the Agios Vasilios municipality, as well as the fire in the gorge, while the fire brigade's ground forces are fully mobilised.

A wildfire burning grass and low vegetation also started in the Tzaverdella region of Aspropyrgos, Attica on Wednesday morning, the fire brigade reported, with a call coming through at about 10:30. A force of 34 fire fighters, with two teams on foot and 10 vehicles, was deployed against the blaze, assisted by a firefighting helicopter from the air.
According to the fire department, there are businesses and warehouses scattered in the area.
Also on Wednesday morning, a forest fire started in a location north of the village Megali Spilia in Lakonia, where 43 fire fighters with 13 vehicles and one team on foot have been ranged against the flames, assisted by three aircraft and one helicopter.
