A deceased infant was discovered in a landfill and Greek police arrested a couple from Nepal as suspects.
According to the police, a woman from Nepal visited the "Alexandra" hospital with her husband on Thursday, due to gynecologic hemorrhage. During the examination, doctors determined that the woman had been pregnant but could not confirm whether she had given birth or had had a miscarriage, and informed the Greek police accordingly.
Police officers who visited the hotel where the couple resided in Vravrona, southeastAttica, found blood stains throughout the room but could not locate the newborn.
Police sources said that video footage revealed the husband had disposed of the newborn in the trash bin. However, the infant was not found there during the police search, as the garbage had already been collected by the Markopoulo Municipality.
A search at the landfill where municipal waste is deposited led to the discovery of the deceased newborn. Its cause of death will be determined by forensic examination, as it remains unclear whether the infant was stillborn or killed after it was born.
The Nepali couple has been detained, with the woman under guard at the hospital and the man held by Attica police security.
