Vodafone Greece ready to launch 5G service

Vodafone will cover 60 pct of Greece with a 5G network in the next three years and will launch its commercial services in the first quarter of 2021 after completion of a tender procedure for selling radiowaves by the end of 2020 as scheduled.

Haris Broumidis, chairman and CEO in Vodafone Greece, said that the company has timely invested on its own network so it can be ready to proceed with the development of 5G as soon as possible. He noted that the service will be available initially in Athens and Thessaloniki. Broumidis said the current period is the ideal for tools contributing to bring 5G technology to the most remote regions of the country, bringing cutting-edge technologies. He added that the development of an open wireless access network was the basic target of an Open RAN international alliance in which Vodafone group is a founding member. Broumidis welcomed the fact that at least five out of 7 policy priorities set by the European Commission for funding from a Europen Recovery Fund refer to digital technologies.
