Very high temperatures expected across Greece in the coming week

Very high temperatures will prevail across Greece throughout this week, with the highest values expected on Thursday (July 24) and Friday (July 25). The heatwave is expected to last until Sunday.

According to the updated Emergency Deterioration Weather Bulletin from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), it is noted that:

A. Minimum temperatures will remain high (around 27 to 29 degrees Celsius, mainly in urban areas).
B. From Friday (July 25) onwards, strong northerly winds of 6 Beaufort will gradually prevail in the eastern parts of the country, especially in the Aegean Sea, intensifying further on Saturday (July 26).

Detailed forecast up to Friday:

Tuesday and Wednesday, maximum temperatures will reach:
a) In mainland Greece, 39 to 41 ° C, locally reaching 42 ° C in Central Macedonia, Eastern Central Greece, and the Eastern Peloponnese, and 43 ° C in Thessaly. In Athens and Thessaloniki, they will reach 39 to 40 ° C.
b) In the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese, 37 to 39 ° C, locally rising to 40 to 41 ° C on Wednesday.
c) In the Ionian islands and on Wednesday also in Crete, 37 to 38 ° C.

On Thursday (July 24), maximum temperatures will reach:
a) Mainland Greece: 39 to 41 ° C, locally 42 to 43 ° C in the eastern regions. Athens: 41 to 42 ° C, Thessaloniki: 40 ° C.
b) Eastern Aegean islands and Dodecanese: 38 to 40 ° C.
c) Ionian islands and Crete: 37 to 39 ° C.

On Friday (July 25), maximum temperatures will reach:
a) Mainland Greece: 40 to 41 ° C, locally 42 ° C, and 43 ° C in western areas. Athens: 41 to 42 ° C, Thessaloniki: 39 ° C.
b) Eastern Aegean islands and Dodecanese: 38 to 40 ° C.
c) Ionian islands: 38 to 40 ° C.
d) Southern Crete: 39 ° C.

Health ministry issues list of at-risk groups during heatwaves

Due to the prolonged high temperatures expected this week, and with public health protection as a top priority, the Health Ministry issued a reminder of the guidelines for protection against the effects of the heatwave and urged all members of the public but especially those in vulnerable groups to follow the recommendations.
Healthcare units across the country have been placed on high alert, while municipalities are called upon to ensure that cool and air-conditioned spaces are available to the public.

Those most at risk include:

Elderly people

Infants and young children

Pregnant and breastfeeding women

Overweight or obese individuals

People who do strenuous manual work or exercise in hot environments

Individuals with chronic health conditions (cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, lung diseases, hemoglobinopathies, kidney diseases, liver diseases, mental illness, dementia, alcoholism, or substance abuse, etc.)

People with acute illnesses such as infections with fever or gastroenteritis (diarrhea or vomiting)

Individuals who, for purely medical reasons, take medications for chronic conditions, such as diuretics, anticholinergics, psychotropic drugs, hormone treatments (including insulin and antidiabetic pills). Especially during periods of high ambient temperatures, they should consult their doctor regarding possible dosage adjustments.
