Parliament plenary begins debate on whether to prosecute Karamanlis over Tempi

A debate, to be followed by a vote, began in a plenary session of Parliament on Tuesday to decide whether or not to prosecute former infrastructure and transport minister Kostas Karamanlis for the possible offence of breach of duty over the running of the Hellenic Railways Organisation, which led to the rail disaster at Tempi.
Members of Parliament are discussing the findings of the Ad Hoc Parliamentary Preliminary Investigation Committee set up for this purpose.
The session opened at 9:00 with statements by the party rapporteurs.  Two organised rounds of speeches by MPs will follow, proportional to the parties' parliamentary representation, as well as by the parliamentary representatives of the parties. Political leaders of the opposition are also expected to participate in the debate.
The government will be represented in the discussion by the Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis.
The final decision will be made in a vote on the ruling majority’s recommendations, held by secret ballot, which is expected to begin about 21:00 on Tuesday.
Acceptance or rejection of the majority’s proposal to press charges against the former minister requires an absolute majority of all members of parliament - or at least 151 votes.
