Thessaly, East Central Greece, Peloponnese register highest temperatures on Monday

The highest temperatures in Greece on Monday were recorded in Thessaly, East Central Greece, and the Peloponnese, according to the automated network of meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens/Meteo.gr.

On Monday - the start of a heatwave expected to peak on Thursday and end on Sunday - the highest temperature was recorded in Karditsa, Thessaly, at 41.8C.

According to a map of the National Observatory of Athens/Meteo.gr, temperature rose above 35C in 342 of 547 active stations (around 62% of the total), 37C in 198 stations (around 36%), and 40C in 29 stations.

The average maximum temperature (35.6C) was 1.9C higher than that of Sunday, July 20, when it reached 33.7C.

The attached map (see photo) show the distribution of the highest temperature in Greece, as well as the 8 stations with the highest maximum temperatures. It should be noted that the white circles denote the stations where the highest temperature exceeded 37C.
