Foreign ministry: Rights deriving from Greek sovereignty are not subject to negotiation

"The establishment of Marine National Parks in the Ionian and the Aegean Sea is based on purely environmental criteria in areas under Greek sovereignty," the Greek foreign ministry said on Monday, replying to a Turkish foreign ministry announcement.
"References to closed or semi-closed seas are entirely unfounded," the Greek ministry said, and added;
"The legal status in the Aegean is absolutely clear. Greek sovereignty in this region is clearly and definitively established by the texts of international treaties."
The ministry noted that Greece is always in favour of dialogue with Turkiye with the aim of settLing the sole bilateral dispute between the two countries - the delimitation of the continental shelf and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) - in accordance with international law.
"The exercise of rights that derive from Greek sovereignty is not subject to negotiation," the ministry concluded.
