Marinakis: Greece creating new marine parks, implementing PM's commitment

"Earlier today, the Prime Minister announced the implementation of the commitment he had made at the UN Ocean Conference, with the creation of two new marine national parks - one in the Ionian Sea and one in the Southern Cyclades in the Aegean Sea," stated government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis at the start of the daily press briefing on Monday.

“ These parks will be among the largest protected areas in the entire Mediterranean and will allow us to achieve the goal of protecting 30% of our territorial waters by 2030, well ahead of schedule,” he emphasised.

He also said that Alternate Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis has submitted Greece's sixth request for the disbursement of funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, totaling 2.1 billion euros in grants, to the European Commission. This request followed the fulfillment of 39 new milestones and targets. "With the completion of this sixth request, total disbursements to Greece will reach 23.4 billion euros, representing 65% of the total funds allocated to the country. Specifically, grant disbursements will amount to 12.04 billion euros, or 66% of the available grant resources,as for the loan component, amounting to 1.8 billion euros, the request is expected to be submitted in September".

The government spokesperson also stated that "the Internal Affairs Service once again successfully fulfilled its mission, as part of a coordinated and well-organised operation, seizing the largest quantity of cocaine ever confiscated in Mykonos. At the same time, it dismantled the drug trafficking ring, which included active-duty police officers among its members."
