PM Mitsotakis on 51st anniversary of Cyprus invasion: Legality and the values of the 21st century demand a just solution for Cyprus

"The dark anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, this year also, again rekindles the memories of raw violence, loss and displacement. It also, however, strengthens the struggle to reunify the island as a modern, European state. Without occupation forces, and ready to act as a beacon of stability and peace in the troubled seas of the Eastern Mediterranean," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a social media post on Sunday to mark the 51st year since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
"A just solution to the Cyprus problem is demanded by international legality and the values of the 21st century. It is also imposed by current events, especially in a troubled region. For this reason, the inter-communal talks must gain momentum that leads to progress along the path laid out by UN Security Council resolutions. A path that Athens and Nicosia follow consistently and with total cooperation.
"The slogan 'I do not forget' remains fully current, in any case. In Cyprus, with a constant and methodical effort to restore sovereign rights and in Greece, with the constant strengthening of defensive and diplomatic power. The struggle for justice is a shared one and will be victorious. As Europe, the peoples of the world and history itself desire," the prime minister concluded.
