Michailidou discusses new housing programmes with EU Commissioner Jørgensen

Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou held a meeting on Thursday with European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen, following the Commissioner's meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion.
The discussion focused on three main pillars: The priorities of the upcoming European Affordable Housing Plan, the role of the Pan-European Investment Platform in facilitating financing and mobilising private capital, with a focus on Greece, the utilisation of new opportunities provided by the revised EU cohesion policy, with an emphasis on increasing investments in affordable housing.
After the end of their meeting the two ministers made statements to the press.
Domna Michailidou stated: "Today, I had the opportunity for a particularly constructive and meaningful discussion with the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Mr. Jørgensen, immediately following his earlier meeting with the Prime Minister. Access to affordable housing is at the heart of both the European Union’s priorities and those of our government. We are committed to and investing in collaboration for the exchange of best practices and the formulation of European social policies as a foundation for ensuring a decent standard of living for citizens and fostering the development of our societies. The implementation of active policies and the use of national and European resources are key initiatives in addressing housing challenges. We prioritise those facing the greatest difficulties: families with children, single-parent households, people with disabilities, youth, middle-income workers, low-wage earners, and our most vulnerable fellow citizens."
On his part Jørgensen said: "I am the first European Commissioner to have housing as a distinct part of my portfolio. The reason for this is that Europe is in the midst of a deep housing crisis.
"Greece is also facing many of these challenges. From a European perspective, we are exploring how we can support you in addressing some of these issues. We are gathering ideas and working together with Member States, exchanging best practices to identify solutions that can truly make a difference. That’s why the information I receive about the housing situation in Greece is especially valuable to me. I’m listening carefully, and I will bring your thoughtful proposals back to Brussels. We fully understand the need for increased funding, and we are willing to provide new financial tools to Member States for housing-particularly socially oriented housing. We are working in that direction and will remain in close contact with the Greek government and with you, Minister, in the coming months."
