Gerapetritis: We support a Syrian-led and owned, structured and inclusive political transition

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis described the situation in Syria as "particularly critical", expressing strong concern about the escalation of violence in Sweida and the humanitarian burden it entails.
Speaking to the Security Council, he expressed Greece's dismay at the reports of humiliating treatment of civilians, mutilations, as well as incitement to interfaith violence, as also noted by the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy, Geir Pedersen.
He unequivocally condemned the attacks on civilians and places of worship in Sweida, making special reference to the recent attack on the Catholic Church of St. Michael and the bombing of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Prophet Elias in Damascus. He stressed that these incidents highlight the challenges facing Christian communities in Syria and the need for full protection of all religious and ethnic groups.
Gerapetritis appealed for de-escalation and facilitation of humanitarian access, while calling on the transitional authorities to contribute sincerely and ensure accountability for crimes.
He referred to the recent ceasefire announcement in Sweida and stressed the need for a "transparent, rapid and in line with international standards" investigation of the violations, in order for "all Syrians to feel safe in their country."
Gerapetritis reiterated Greece's consistent position in support of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, respect for the 1974 Withdrawal Agreement and support for the work of UNDOF. He stressed that the security and coexistence of all communities is an integral part of these principles.
As Syria stands at a crossroads, it is imperative that we support a credible, Syrian-led and -owned, coherent and inclusive political transition in accordance with the core principles of Security Council Resolution 2254/2015, Gerapetritis concluded.
