Gerapetritis: The return of the Cyprus issue to the top of the international agenda is important

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, in a statement to public broadcaster ERT, described the resumption of the process for resolving the Cyprus issue under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General, following the conclusion of the informal meeting at the United Nations in New York, as an extremely positive development.
"Eight years after Crans Montana and the inaction that followed, it is extremely important that the Cyprus issue is now at the top of the Secretary-General's agenda," Gerapetritis stressed on Thursday, noting that the Secretary-General has appointed a Personal Envoy to closely monitor developments.
As he stated, the meeting assessed the implementation of the six confidence-building measures that had been agreed in Geneva, four of which have already been implemented, while four more were agreed. This progress, he said, creates a "favourable ground" to begin a more substantive discussion on achieving a solution within the framework of the UN Security Council Resolutions.
"The message of a united Cyprus is necessary today in a world experiencing bloodshed, wars and intolerance," he pointed out, stressing the need to continue the effort for the reunification of Cyprus, "the national goal," in full harmony with the Republic of Cyprus.
