Debate opens on bill upgrading railway safety

The debate on a bill to upgrade safety in railroads opened in the Greek Parliament on Thursday, with the addresses of parties' rapporteurs.

As presented to the cabinet and the public by Infrastructure & Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis on April 28, the bill focuses on three basic pillars: 

a. Upgrade of safety infrastrucutre and technological supervision of the railroad network,  

b. Introduction of new safeguards, compliance with the European framework and stricter training, evaluation and penalties for the railroad staff, and

c. New business structure for the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE), and an organizational boosting of critical agencies such as the Railroads Regulatory Authority. The bill includes turning OSE into the independent "Hellenic Railways SA", allowing it to hire officials from the private sector or abroad.
