Marinakis: The aim of the investigation committee is to delve into long-standing failings of OPEKEPE

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis on Thursday announced that ruling New Democracy's (ND) Parliamentary Group had on Wednesday submitted its proposal for a special Parliamentary investigation committee to delve into long-standing dysfunctions of the Greek payment authority for EU agricultural assitance, OPEKEPE.
"The proposal stated that, in light of the 2.7 billion euros in fines imposed since 1996, under various governments and administrations, it is clear that a thorough investigation is needed to identify systemic and structural failures in OPEKEPE's operation, in order to prevent similar issues in the future," Marinakis told a press briefing.
He stressed that the committee is expected to examine all matters related to OPEKEPE's operation, with a view to uncovering potential responsibilities and restoring trust in the agricultural subsidy payment system - ensuring it becomes a fair and efficient mechanism for all producers across the country.
The next topic of the briefing concerned ongoing road checks and the information campaign undertaken by the Hellenic Police as part of the effort to ensure the universal compliance of drivers to the rules of the new Traffic Code.
Marinakis emphasised that in the last 10 months, strategic and emblematic investments amounting to 2.5 billion euros have been approved, which are currently underway.
