Security Council approves Greek-US proposal to extend UN chief's obligation for briefings on Red Sea

The UN Security Council adopted a Resolution which expands to January 15, 2026 the obligation of the Secretary-General for regular briefings related to threats to shipping in the Red Sea, as foreseen in paragraph 10 of Resolution 2722 (2024).
The Resolution draft was tabled by Greece and the United States and passed with 12 votes, while Russia, China, and Algeria abstained.
Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, said that protection of free shipping in the Red Sea is critical for global trade chains, and that attacks by the Houthi are a serious source of insecurity and increasing economic cost globally. Sekeris welcomed the renewal of the briefing obligation as a sign of the Council's unity against a joint threat.
