ND submits proposal for Parliamentary investigation committee on OPEKEPE

Ruling New Democracy's proposal to set up an investigation committee to look into the OPEKEPE case was submitted to parliament by 60 MPs of the ruling majority on Wednesday.
The relevant announcement was made by the vice-president of the parliament, Giorgos Georgantas.
The ND proposal calls for a full investigation of the problems at OPEKEPE spanning all the years of its existence, including the sum total of fines amounting to 2.7 billion euros imposed since 1996, checks on tax registration numbers (AFM), the 'technical solution' and the consultants. It said the aim is to pinpoint structural weaknesses and ensure that subsidies go to those truly entitled to them.
It rejects the opposition's objections that the offences may become statute-barred, pointing out that the constitutional revision of 2019 has removed this possibility.
The proposal also cites indications in the case file pointing to extensive corruption among high-ranking officials in OPEKEPE and notes that the investigation committee must fully investigate all the issues that have arisen regarding its operation in order to restore its credibility.
