Tsoukalas: ND's proposal for investigative committee is meant to hide its own responsibility

The proposal for an investigative committee for the misappropriation of EU farm funds handled by the agency OPEKEPE and the refusal of a preliminary investigative committee "is white-washing, given the fact that the European Prosecutor has warned of the danger of the statute of limitations running out on October 6," PASOK-Movement for Change (KINAL) spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas said on Monday, speaking to radio station Parapolitika 90.1 FM.

Tsoukalas added that "the government, by rejecting our proposal and  the investigative 'soup' it proposes so we may 'learn' what has been happening in OPEKEPE for the last 30 years aims at hiding the culpabilities resulting from the case file and identification of specific people.'

According to the PASOK spokeperson, the conversations contained in the case file do not refer to decades-long irregularities but to specific ministers' and officials' names "with a very clear party identity." Instead, the government "is trying to convince us we have nothing else here but a reflection of long-term distortions. We have illegal acts here, not distortions" and an entire mechanism behind them, Tsoukalas said.
