Greece one of five countries to try out first age-verification app, EU says

Greece and another four European member-states will be the first to run on a trial basis an age-verification blueprint for Internet users, the European Commission announced on Monday.

In the context of the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Commission presented a prototype app to confirm majority age on the Internet and prevent minors from accessing harmful and dangerous content.

According to the Commission, the verification app will be tried by Greece, Denmark, Spain, France, and Italy, and adapted further in cooperation with the. They are the first countries to collaborate with the Commision for a technical solution in order to plan national applications of age verification.

"The blueprint on age verification provides a method to enable users to prove they are over 18 when accessing restricted adult content, such as online pornography, without revealing any other personal information. It is based on open-source technology and designed to be robust, user-friendly, privacy-preserving and fully interoperable with future European Digital Identity Wallets," the Commission said.

It added that the app "also lays the groundwork for broader deployment of age-appropriate services in the future. It is also referred to as the 'mini-wallet', as it is built on the same technical specifications as the forthcoming European Digital Identity Wallets (EUDIW), ensuring long-term compatibility and providing a stepping stone toward the rollout of the EUDIW before the end of 2026."
