Dep FM Theoharis: We are ready to defend our European interests with unity

BRUSSELS (ANA/MPA-M.Aroni) --- "We are ready to defend European interests, if necessary, with unity" stated Deputy Foreign Minister Haris Theoharis shortly after the conclusion of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on trade matters, which took place on Monday in Brussels.

"In a changing geostrategic environment, trade is not merely a simple tool, but a force of power for the EU. It multiplies our position in the world and allows the competitiveness of the European economy to increase," said the Greek minister.

He stated that today’s Council discussed the challenges in the partnership between the U.S. and Europe, the dynamics of EU-China relations, as well as the other agreements the EU has engaged in recently.

"As for our transatlantic alliance, it is the most important one, and Europe always prioritizes cooperation over confrontation," emphasised Theoharis, adding that "nevertheless, with unity, we are ready to defend European interests, if necessary."

Regarding China, Theoharis noted that the EU’s priorities were discussed, while also expressing anticipation for an upcoming EU-China Summit in the coming weeks, which is expected to go beyond symbolism and deliver tangible results.

Finally, the Greek minister referred to the many and "significant trade agreements" of the EU, the most recent being yesterday’s political agreement between Indonesia and the EU. As he stated, these agreements provide an "alternative" both in terms of the supply of the European economy and in relation to its exports.

"We believe that the EU’s strength, within this diverse and complex geostrategic environment in which we live, will be enhanced through the successful conclusion of these agreements," he added.
