The Hellenic Police on Friday announced the arrest of a 72-year-old Oropos resident on charges of negligent arson, as a suspect for starting the wildfire that broke out near Asprochori, Oropos in Attica on Wednesday.
According to the fire brigade, the 72-year-old was tending beehives at the location where the fire started, even though there was a category 5 (extreme fire risk - state of alert) fire risk warning on that day.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday and received an administrative fine of 9,750 euros. He remained in custody and will be led before an examining magistrate on Friday.
