Tsoukalas: Government took no action to reform OPEKEPE

The government has clearly taken no action itself to reform OPEKEPE, the organisation for the payment of EU agricultural aid, and since 2020 has fired any director that attempted to do so, main opposition PASOK-KINAL press spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas said on Thursday, to OPEN television.
He accused the government of continuing to target the OPEKEPE employee who had helped reveal the scandal and of "disgracing the country abroad," while criticising the opposition parties for pointing out its wrongful actions.
Regarding the increase in migration from Libya to Crete, Tsoukalas spoke of a "hybrid war", in which Libya was "instrumentalising" migration as a lever for money and for the recognition of the regime in eastern Libya.
"The fact that the foreign minister went to meet Haftar's son is like giving indirect recognition without have received anything yourself. Therefore, I consider that a policy of mistakes was continued here," he added.
With respect to the amendment tabled in Parliament for a temporary suspension of processing asylum applications, Tsoukalas said this would be counterproductive as the issue was to speed up returns, something that a backlog of asylum applications will prevent.
