Wildfires in Oropos, Attica and island of Thassos coming under control

Large wildfires that started around Asprochori in Oropos, Attica and on the island of Thassos were gradually coming under control after burning throughout the night, the fire department reported on Thursday morning.
Strong fire-fighting forces worked all night to prevent the flames from reaching the houses of Asprochori, which appear not to have sustained any damage. Several fire fighters remain to quickly douse any flames that may rekindle, while fire-fighting aircraft resumed operations at first light. The wildfire had started at around 18:00 on Wednesday.
The fire on Thassos started at 11:00 at night in an area known as Glykadi, near the island's port and capital, for as-yet unknown causes. Fire-fighting aircraft took off to provide assistance at first light and quickly brought the flames under control. No inhabited areas were threatened by the flames but one hotel was evacuated as a precaution.
A total of 55 fire fighters with 15 vehicles and two ground teams, assisted by municipality water trucks and digging machinery supplied by a local quarry, as well as numerous volunteers were used in the fire-fighting effort.
