Sekeris at UN: Greece strongly condemns Houthi attacks; calls for immediate cessation of violence

The UN Security Council discussed on Wednesday multiple challenges Yemen faces on the political, humanitarian, and economic fronts. The Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, condemned in the strongest possible terms the recent blatant Houthi attacks against the Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned commercial vessels Magic Seas and Eternity C in the Red Sea.
Ambassador Sekeris also called for the immediate and unconditional cessation of the Houthis' violence against the lives of seafarers and international shipping.
He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the attacks launched by the Houthis on 6 and 7 July against the Liberian-flagged Greek-owned cargo ships Magic Seas and Eternity C.
As noted, the ships were hit a few nautical miles from the port of Hodeidah, resulting in the sinking of both ships and the loss of three crew members so far, with sixteen people missing.
Sekeris described the attacks as "well-planned and thoroughly organised", carried out with ferocity and using advanced weapon systems such as drones, RPG rockets and anti-aircraft missiles, indicating highly trained and fully equipped forces.
Sekeris stressed that the UN has a collective responsibility to protect seafarers, whose daily contribution to global trade is crucial, adding that any form of threat to their lives and safety is totally unacceptable and unjustifiable.
He also stressed that the European Naval Operation ASPIDES immediately coordinated the mobilisation of all available means in the region to offer assistance to the attacked crew members.
Sekeris reiterated Greece's steadfast commitment to the protection of navigational rights and freedoms in the Red Sea.
Greece reiterated its support for UN efforts for a political solution, noting that "there can be no long-term stability in the region unless the peace process in Yemen is put back on track".
It is noted that the renewal of Security Council Resolution 2768 (2025) on maritime security in the Red Sea, in which Greece has a joint role as an author with the US, is imminent.
According to reports, in a closed session on the issue, following a Greek initiative supported by a large number of member states, the Security Council will elaborate a press statement condemning the attacks on the two Greek-owned ships by the Houthis.
