Gov't spokesperson: Migration issue in Europe cannot be managed by wishful thinking

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis criticized opposition parties for their stance against the Greek government on Libya's behavior and its stricter measures on the migrant issue, on Wednesday.

Earlier, the prime minister had informed Parliament that Greece will suspend asylum application processing for migrants from Africa, for three months.

In an interview to Skai FM, Marinakis said the opposition parties "reached the point of saying this is a move against Greece," and accused them of exercising opposition to Greece itself, not the government, particularly mentioning main opposition party PASOK. The spokesperson said of the opposition parties, "it is one thing levelling criticism, and it is another to level everything and term everything a government failure."

"The major issue is for Europe's relevant bodies to understand that the prolonged migration crisis cannot be managed either with theories or wishful thinking," he asserted, adding that "Greece is not joking and will show this, always in respect of International Law and human rights." Greece's stance will become stricter, in order to convey the message in all directions that "whoever comes to Greece and is illegal will face specific repercussions, as set out by laws, especially in extraordinary situations," Marinakis said.
