The Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris, participated along with the Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner in the European mission that visited Tripoli, Libya, where they met with the Government of National Unity to discuss the migratory pressures on Crete. During the first meeting in Tripoli with the internationally recognised government, they sent a clear message that they would help Libya detain illegal migrants, prevent departures to the EU, and, at the same time, return them home. Crete is under enormous pressure from eastern Libya, and this is something that must stop, both the European side and Plevris stressed in his statement after the meeting. The second meeting in Benghazi with Khalifa Haftar is expected to begin.
