Greece begins issuing rejections for Syrian asylum seekers

Six months after the fall of the Assad regime, the management of asylum applications by Syrian citizens in Greece is changing, as the first rejections have now been issued. Specifically, individuals who are Sunni Muslims, single males, non-vulnerable, and have a support network in Damascus are likely to have their asylum claims conditionally rejected and then begin the return process.

Greece has now become the second EU member state, after Cyprus, to issue negative decisions for Syrian citizens.

In the first months after the fall of Assad, the only rejected asylum decisions concerning Syrians involved applicants who posed a threat to national security and public order in Greece or had committed a felony criminal offense.

Sources at the Migration and Asylum Ministry have stated that Greece is establishing a new status quo regarding the management of illegal arrivals, and a relevant new bill is expected to be brought to Parliament for a vote in the near future.
