Fire in Karystos area villages presenting improved picture after overnight battle

The fire burning in the southern Evia area between Nea Styra, Tsakei and Limnionas (Karystos municipality) as of Friday evening presented an improved picture on Saturday, following all-night efforts by firefighers who managed to stop the blaze's progress and protect residences.

High-velocity winds obstructed efforts to put the fire out, while rekindling was constant, with water trucks of the municipality and Region along with large-earth machines trying to strenghten fire zones and control key areas.

Initial reports said there was no damage to homes, but farming facilities have been destroyed. Several farmers managed to evacuate their herds, but the fire has burnt down large orchards of olive trees and vineyards.

An evacuation order was issued during the night to residents of Tsakei and Limnionas villages through the emergency 112 number, although several residents chose to remain and protect their properties.

The fire started shortly after 19:00 on Friday in a ravine with thick and dry growth, and was spread by strong winds toward the Tsakei village, threatening homes there and nearby villages during the night.

Over 160 firefighters with 46 fire trucks from Central Greece and the Peloponnese, along with volunteers and residents, have been involved in puttingout the fire. Several aeroplanes and helicopters are assisting during daylinght hours.
