New 112 message to Althea due to Koropi fire; sections of Athens-Sounion road closed

Another message from the 112 emergency number was sent to residents of the seaside region of Althea, Attica on Friday, advising them to evacuate toward Agia Marina, Koropi and Varkiza due to the fire burning at Agios Dimitrios in Koropi, Attica.
Messages were sent earlier to residents in Agios Dimitrios, Galazia Akti and Althea, directing them toward Lagonisi.
According to a fire department announcement, an arson investigation team has been sent to investigate the cause of the fire.
In its latest update, the fire department said that the fire fighters battling the Koropi blaze have been reinforced and that there were now 120 fire fighters, including seven ground teams of the EMODE forest fires unit, 30 fire engines and volunteers deployed in the area, as well as volunteers, with assistance from eight airplanes and eight helicopters, of which one was used for coordination purposes. In addition, a fire brigade boat and Coast Guard vessels are patrolling the shore.
Local authority digging machinery and water trucks are providing support to the fire fighting effort.
The fire appears to have similar characteristics with that in Rafina on Thursday, starting in a residential area with a direction toward the sea.
The Hellenic Police have proceeded to close sections of the Athens-Sounion Avenue and surrounding roads near the fire to traffic as follows:
- Athens-Sounion Avenue from the junction with Agia Marina Avenue in lanes toward Sounion
- Agia Marina Avenue from the junction with Agiou Dimitriou Road
- Athens-Sounion Avenue from the junction with Agiou Dimitriou Road in lanes toward Athens
- Athens-Sounion Avenue from the junction with Loumbarda Road in lanes toward Sounion
