Fire fighting forces still battling Ierapetra wildfire; state of emergency in three areas

The battle against the wildfire in Ierapetra, Crete continued for a third day on Friday, with a state of emergency declared for three villages in the municipality. Six fire-fighting aircraft resumed operations on Friday morning, assisting the 230 fire fighters, with 12 ground units and 48 fire engines, that form the core of the fire-fighting effort.
The fire department reported strong winds in the area, saying that there were many scattered fires and several locations that are still smouldering and reignite to start smaller or larger rekindlings.
An arson investigation unit has arrived in Crete, while the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has declared a state of emergency in the municipal unit Makrys Gialos and the municipal communities of Ierapetra and Agios Ioannis. The decision was taken to  better deal with emergency needs and to handle the repercussions of the wildfires, while it is valid until October 2.
