Minister of Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis, addressing the Economist conference “ 29th Annual Government Roundtable - Walking steadily across a tightrope of uncertainty”, stressed that Greece is stronger than ever.

Pierrakakis referred to the primary surplus of 4.8% of GDP and growth of 2.3%, stressing that Greece has fiscal stability and technological development that helps to tackle the tax evasion. He also underlined that 10 years ago there were capital controls. "It is a miracle how we managed and dealt with the situation. It is a sign of everyone's perseverance and patience," he said, adding that there is a strategy to strengthen the economy. “ We face many challenges, but we can overcome them,” noted Pierrakakis.

He also referred to a 3+1 point strategy. The first one, he said, concerns the threats and tariff barriers that Europe has to deal with as it moves towards European integration. The other three strategic points, as Pierrakakis said, concern the national level. These are:

-The removal of barriers (such as bureaucracy) both within and between EU member states.
- Areas where achievements will be made at the national and, by extension, at the European level, citing as an example education and how it can contribute to growth in the future.
- The Growthfund and more privatisations through it.

Pierrakakis also pointed out that exports/GDP were 10% in 2019 and are currently at 42%, while the EU average is 51%"A country like Greece should be at 60."%. We are in the middle of the road, and we can build on it (the 42% figure) as far as the new economic model is concerned," he said.
