Marinakis: Unemployment has fallen to the lowest level in 17 years

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis began Thursday press briefing by highlighting ELSTAT's report that unemployment has declined further to 7.9% in May, from 10.5% in May 2024 and 8.3% in April, 2025. He noted that this was the lowest unemployment rate of the last 17 years, since 2008.
According to Marinakis, these new jobs acted as an "accelerator" for growth, while the reduction of 72 direct and indirect taxes has "opened up the way for staffing businesses with new personnel". This meant the state was paying less for unemployment benefits and was able to direct this money elsewhere, while a greater number of workers were paying taxes and thus increasing state revenues, enabling permanent measures to assist vulnerable citizens, such as rent rebates and support for pensioners.
The spokesperson also referred to the wildfires burning throughout the country and the "titanic efforts" of the fire department to extinguish fires and protect lives and property, as well as to protect the natural environment.
