Hatzidakis: The proposal to acquire the Athens Stock Exchange is a vote of confidence

The proposal for the acquisition of the Athens Stock Exchange by the European stock exchange group Euronext is a vote of confidence and contributes to the upgrading of the Greek capital market, Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis said on Wednesday in an interview with Skai TV.

"Foreign stock exchanges are seriously looking at the Greek one; we are changing category," he added.

It is a step that certifies the progress that has been made in the Greek economy. He noted that, regardless of the rise in the index since 2019, after many years of crisis, until now there has not been much mobility on the part of companies to be listed on the Athens Exchange. "Developments show that there is a dynamic," he underlined.

Hatzidakis stressed that geopolitical developments underline that Greece must constantly look at its own affairs and how to strengthen the country, not only militarily but also economically. "I completely understand the discussion about an equitable distribution of wealth but I would equally understand a discussion about how the economy will run faster by adopting growth measures that also support Greece nationally," he pointed out.

"We paid for our mistakes in the past decade, now the economy is being restructured and it must continue in order to have convergence with the EU. We must understand that the best answer is to support the economy, the productive mechanism and private initiative," he added.

In response to a question about OPEKEPE, the Deputy Prime Minister replied that next week the first provision for the absorption of the payment authority by the AADE, which is included in a bill of the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, will be discussed in Parliament. Other arrangements will follow, as he said, in an organised manner, so that the shadows regarding agricultural subsidies stop and in the meantime the subsidies of farmers are paid. "We want to show that we are not just changing a page but a chapter," he emphasised.
