ECONOMIST IMPACT - Papastavrou: Task force on energy prices to be activated in the coming days

The task force established by a decision of the EU Council of Energy Ministers to examine the systematic divergences in electricity prices between Central-Northern and South-East Europe will be activated, Environment and Energy Stavros Minister Papastavrou said on Wednesday, addressing the Economist conference in Athens.

In the context of the same conference, it was announced that Ukraine for the first time purchased natural gas through the virtual trading point of the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA).

In particular:

Papastavrou underlined that South-East Europe is facing historically higher electricity prices, something that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pointed out last year. This reality challenges the European model and gives room to populist voices, the minister stressed, expressing his satisfaction with the creation of the task force. He also referred to the rapid growth of renewable energy sources since 2019, during which RES capacity doubled, lignite use decreased by 91% and carbon dioxide emissions by 46%. Papastavrou also highlighted Greece's role as a regional energy hub, which "is only the beginning, as rail and road transport will follow."
