Rural Development Min Tsiaras meets FAO’s Qu Dongyu in Rome

The Minister of Rural Development and Food, Kostas Tsiaras, met on Tuesday with the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN Qu Dongyu.

Tsiaras, speaking to ANA-MPA, stressed that the aim of the meeting was to strengthen FAO’s relations with Greece. “ Given that Greece is in a privileged geopolitical position, uniting three different continents, it is very important for the FAO to use this to highlight various issues that concern it.”

He also underlined that he proposed organising conferences in Greece on issues of interest to the FAO. “ We have to take into account that the agri-food sector, which is of top importance for us, has started to become particularly significant. Given that we are the southernmost European country, it is certainly important to have an impact on Asian and African countries,” said Tsiaras.

As Tsiaras said, Qu Dongyu stressed that Greece, due to its geostrategic position, can coordinate actions. “ Our main focus is on zoonoses, which we have tackled with great success, including receiving credit from the European Commission. It is also very interesting to observe that new invasive and aggressive fish species are entering the Mediterranean because of increased water temperature. We are talking about a phenomenon that poses a major issue for Mediterranean and European fisheries. At the same time, because of the climate crisis, the entire agri-food sector has to be reviewed,” he concluded.
