Fire near the city of Kavala extinguished though fears of rekindling remain

The forest fire that broke out near the entrance of the city of Kavala was fully under control by 14:30 on Sunday afternoon. Strong concern remained, however, about the possibility of flames rekindling dur to the strong winds blowing in the area.
Large fire-fighting forces on the ground and in the air fought hard to contain the front and prevent it reaching nearby residential areas and a bus depot near the location was evacuated as a precaution.
The eastern entrance of the Kavala-Xanthi national highway remained closed for more than two hours. Tailbacks forced at the Egnatia Highway toll plazas at Nea Karvali as this was the only way to reach the city.
Fire department forces on the ground and in the air will remain on alert for the next 24 hours while the cause of the blaze remains unknown, with both a power cable short circuit and deliberate arson being possible scenarios.
