Deputy FM Chatzivasileiou meets with EU Commissioner Šefčovič in Brussels

Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy and External Relations Tasos Chatzivasiliou met on Thursday in Brussels with Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič.

Chatzivasiliou was informed about the ongoing trade negotiations with the US, aiming to secure an agreement by 9 July, the deadline for the expiration of the suspension of US tariffs.

Both agreed that a possible escalation of trade tensions would have negative consequences for both economies. Chatzivasileiou reiterated Greek support for a negotiated settlement, provided that reciprocity of benefits is ensured and the EU's regulatory autonomy is not put in question.

The discussions also encompassed the European Commission's negotiations with India and various other Asian countries aimed at finalising trade agreements. Šefčovič underlined that the protectionist trade policy of the US acts as a catalyst to increase the willingness of third countries to join agreements with the EU.
