Xenokostas (ONEX): Agreement with a Greek-owned company for 2 plus 2 tugboats

An agreement with a Greek-owned company to build 2+2 new tugboats will be signed for the first time within the coming weeks, in the wake of an agreement between ONEX Elefsis Shipyards and Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for the construction of 20 new tugboats signed on June 23, ONEX Group Chairman and CEO Panos Xenokostas announced.

"In the coming weeks we will sign for the first time with a company with Greek interests, an agreement for 2+2 tugboats, while in 2026 we want to expand our production line with another 20 tugboats. Our production line is secured and in November we will cut the first sheet metal. In addition, we offer a comprehensive solution to businesses in Greece or abroad, through financing packages such as the Performance Based Logistics model," he said.

The agreement already signed with Bureau Veritas concerns the construction of 20 new RAstar 2800 tugboats at ONEX's shipyards in Elefsis, marking the official restart of new building activity in Greece.

It was signed by Xenokostas, who is also President of the Association of Hellenic Shipyards, and the Senior Vice President BV Marine & Offshore Division, East Europe, Mediterranean Sea, Middle East, Africa and India (EMA) of Bureau Veritas, Paillette Palaiologou.

Xenokostas stressed the importance of this historic step for the Greek shipbuilding industry: "Since 2018, when we started in very difficult years for the shipbuilding industry, we dreamed, envisioned, planned and implemented this dream. Today we see the shipyards working, directly and indirectly bringing back thousands of jobs, with over 720 ships having been repaired in Syros and Elefsis."

Referring to the strategic choice of tugs as the starting point for the new build ships, he noted: "We decided to start with tugs as it is a small and controlled investment. It allowed us to try to do everything we wanted in terms of how to prepare the shipyard and to collaborate with major industries and leading companies such as Robert Allan Naval Architects, MAN Energy Solutions SE, SCHOTTEL GmbH, to design a tug that we will be proud of and will offer modern technologies."

The tugs will have latest generation engines and will be adapted to LNG & LPG environments, while they will be able to operate with sophistication in various roles, including firefighting and oil spill cleanup.
