Marinakis addresses DRFMG/LIBE Committee of the European Parliament

The Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, took part in meetings convened with the Member States by the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG) of the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament.
Representatives of all the Eurogroups met in two separate closed-door hearings with both representatives of institutions and Independent Authorities and representatives of the State. On behalf of Greece, apart from Marinakis, the Deputy Minister of Justice Yiannis Bougas and the Secretary General of the PM Stelios Koutnatzis, participated. Marinakis, outlined the steps Greece has taken to align with European standards:
- Regarding the protection of journalists, he highlighted the establishment of the Task Force and the International Training Centre for the Safety of Journalists, the abolition of the offence of simple defamation, and the introduction of a specific offence for threats against sports journalists.
- On improving transparency on media ownership and financing, he reffered to a recent law passed in Parliament, and the new framework for appointing public media management which ensures even greater transparency and good governance.
He also referred to the upcoming reforms, including the licenses to the radio stations and regional TVs, as well as further harmonisation with the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA).
Marinakis stressed that protecting journalism and safeguarding institutions is not merely a matter of compliance. It is a matter of principle, an investment in democracy, while ensuring the safety of those who serve information remains a non-negotiable priority for the Greek State.
