Azeri man accused of spying remanded in custody

A 26-year-old Azeri man arrested on charges of espionage was on Wednesday remanded in custody after his testimony to the public prosecutor and examining magistrate.
The suspect continues to refuse to cooperate and claims that he was in Chania, Crete as a tourist but could not explain the multitude of photographs showing the positions of war ships and traffic in the port of Souda and the naval base and other evidence.
His interpreter said that he had visited the area with another Azeri national and a Polish woman and that he found himself in the village Kalyves after his friends left, intending to photograph landscapes and nature. He also claimed to have been in Athens on January 6 and then travelled to Poland by car, then returning to Athens to buy photography equipment.
The Greek National Intelligence Service is continue an investigation to trace the 26-year-old's associates and the final recipient or recipients of the information he gathered.
