Firefighters' efforts to extinguish the blazes on Chios ongoing on Tuesday

Firefighters on Tuesday continued to battle the flames on the island of Chios, where fires were burning for the second consecutive day.
Reinforcements from Athens, Thessaloniki, Kavala and Lesvos arrived on the island, where 444 firefighters were participating in the fire-fighting operation, with 21 forest commando teams, 85 vehicles, as well as 30 volunteers - hiking units - with four volunteer vehicles. The forces on the ground were being assisted by two firefighting aircraft and six helicopters.
 A total of four aircraft and 14 helicopters have been allocated for aerial firefighting throughout the day, which will operate periodically. The "OLYMPUS" Mobile Operations Centre is also located in Chios, while water tankers and machinery from the Hellenic Army and the local government are providing assistance in the firefighting effort.
