Bill on production of biomethane, water shortage provisions tabled in Parliament

A draft law was tabled in Parliament late on Friday related to biomethane, hydrogen, and a partial incorporation into national law of European Commission Directive 2024/1788 on common rules on natural gas.

The full title of the Greek bill is "Framework for the promotion of biomethane production, regulations for the organization of the hydrogen-production market and the geographically restricted hydrogen networks - Partial incorporation of Directive (EC) 2024/2018 and other regulations for the protection of the environment."

An accompanying report said the draft law will allow the operation of hydrogen and biomethane facilities and link them to existing natural gas distribution networks.

Among other issues, the bill also establishes the process of declaring an emergency in a region due to water shortages, and allows the Athens and Thessaloniki Water Companies (EYDAP and EYDATh) to contract for projects or services to prevent or ameliorate water shortages specifically.

The Directive (EU) 2024/1788 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 relate to common rules for the internal markets for renewable gas, natural gas and hydrogen and amend/repeal previous Directives.
