Seven of 13 prosecuted sports fans testify before a judge; rest on Sat

Seven of 13 organized sports club fans who were charged on Tuesday with a wide range of offenses including misdemeanors and crimes were released with conditions after appearing before a prosecutor on Friday.

The 13 were arrested in a police sweep focusing on criminal gangs among sports fan groups and had been charged with crimes of directing and joining a criminal group; forming a criminal organization; aggravated robbery; kidnapping; grievous bodily harm, and drug trafficking.

The charges also included misdemeanors related to dangerous bodily harm, jointly; assault; carrying a weapon; possession of a weapon; possession of flares, and so on. The charges carry aggravated conditions, since all the acts relate to sports.

Included in the first group of 7 is the person suspected of being the gang leader and a leader of a group association in Athens' southern suburbs.

The restrictions imposed on the suspected ring leader include a 10,000-euro bail, regular appearances at police stations, and a ban on participating in any sports group or attending any sports game.

Hearings on the case are expected to be completed on Saturday, with the remaining 6 individuals to be led before a judge in order to testify.
