Chatzivasileiou: Greece is not afraid to exercise its sovereign rights

"Greece is not afraid to exercise its sovereign rights nor to engage in dialogue, even when there are differences with neighbouring countries. We actively exercise our rights with unwavering commitment to International Law, including the Law of the Sea," Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Chatzivasileiou said on Friday in an interview with Proto Programma.

Commenting on Libya's reaction to Greece's call for bids regarding hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation licenses in offshore areas south of Crete, the Deputy Foreign Minister described it as "clear proof that Greece is acting correctly." As he noted, Athens does not bypass or exclude any dialogue, provided that it takes place within the framework of International Law. He also referred to the intention of Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis to visit Libya.

"The Libyan side is wrong. It denies reality and invokes the illegal Turkiye-Libya memorandum," he stated. Explaining the legal foundations of Greece's position, he noted that the designated offshore blocks are based on the median line.
