Tzitzikostas at ACI Europe conference: EU member states must invest in new technologies and staff to reduce flight delays

Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, speaking at the ACI Europe 2025 Annual Conference and General Assembly in Athens, emphasised the urgent need for Member States to invest in new technologies and staff recruitment to mitigate flight delays. Elaborating on how airports can contribute to the transition to more robust, sustainable and competitive air transport, Tzitzikostas said that “ all stakeholders need to focus on four key areas: airspace capacity, competitiveness, decarbonisation and efficiency, driven by a commitment to innovation, investment, sustainable alternative fuels, resilience and revised legislation where needed.”
He also stressed the need for member states to invest immediately in new technologies and staff recruitment to reduce flight delays.

Tzitzikostas indicated that a review of the legislative framework governing airports is currently in progress, aimed at optimising their capacity and ensuring that airport charges, air slots, and ground services meet the highest possible standards. He also underlined the need to improve the resilience of airports and air transport to modern challenges, from climate change to military conflicts. The conference, as announced, examined the latest developments in the aviation sector and was attended by leaders from the European airport industry, 500 airport executives, prominent global business partners, airlines, aircraft manufacturers, representatives from the wider aviation industry, and key institutional stakeholders.
